If we had recycling, we could easily cut back our garbage pick up to once per week. That would definitely help cover the additional cost of recycle pickup. Or maybe once a week garbage and once a week recycle/landscape debris pickup.
I know many people believe we need twice a week pickup because of either the large amount of trash they produce or the possible smell. To address each item separately:
1. If you separate your recycling into a separate container (usually provide by the sanitation company), one large bin should easily handle your regular garbage. I recycle everything possible (I take my recycles to Galveston once a month) and I still don't need trash pick up once a week even. Last month I had a party with over 60 people here over the course of 5 - 6 hours, drinking, eating making trash, but, because I provided recycle bins for glass, cans and plastic, I STILL only had one can of garbage to put out.
2. The possible smell. If you have a trash can with a close fitting lid, there is no smell. I often don't get my trash can out every week yet there is no smell because of the tight fitting lid.
Often times the sanitation company will even provide a lidded trash can with wheels that can be picked up by the truck automatically thereby reducing time, manpower and cost of pickup. These trash cans tend to be large enough to handle a week's worth of trash (if the recyclables aren't in it) and have wheels large enough that even the frailest person can handle wheeling it from the garage or side of the house to the street once a week.
I personally am tired of paying a higher cost for trash pick up that caters to larger families that don't bother to recycle. Many communities limit the amount of trash they will pick up for the set price and charge extra for additional can/bags of trash. Maybe then people would get on board with recycling.
