I approached the MUD board about this a couple years ago during their regular meeting at the time they were deciding which waste vendor with whom to contract. I asked them to consider adding curbside recycling to our contract, and they discussed it briefly during the meeting. The waste contract was signed shortly thereafter with, to my understanding, no significant attention paid to the request. Additionally, I did not follow up at that time.
A couple months ago, I inquired with the MUD 12 staff about the possibility of adding this service. The current waste contract ends in 2021 (if I recall correctly), so the company would need to be open to amending the current contract. My understanding is that it IS an option. However, I donít know the cost (although I was quoted $10 per house which is different than the $5 quote posted by our former board president who negotiated the contract). In my opinion, itís also important that thereís a receptacle thatís easy for folks to take to the curb and back. I donít have an answer on that regarding cost or feasibility.
Iíve always believed curbside recycling would be a positive action for our community. Like many others, I collect, sort and deliver my recyclables to a local recycling center. However, I think if we make it easier for people to recycle by providing curbside collection, it will significantly increase the volume recycled, thereby decreasing the amount of garbage that ends up in landfills.
With all that said, I think itís first necessary to explore how much support for this exists in our community. If youíre interested in exploring this, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and we can commence a group communication for next steps.
