Look at the directors (who set executive salary levels) and you might discover that it is a good old boys (and girls) club. Executive compensation is out of control in this country and you and I have nothing to say about it. People get :downsized" and executive salaries (i.e. bonuses) go up.
As far as a "brain drain, maybe it would be good to "drain" those that got us in this situation in the 1st place. There is a lot off talent and smart people in this country to replaced them.

If two years from now they decided that nurses should only make 30k a year and electricians only 25k and dentists only 50k and so on would you be in an uproar? I would hope so. Again I agree with you on all of your points but I hope we can find a better way to get it done. Once we go down the path of government having absolute power we can't go back. Wasn't our country supposedly founded in rebelion to such a government? And doesn't it sound alot like a socialist or communist government? I hope something is done about the rampid theft. I agree it is disgusting and I hope they get what they deserve, however I am unwilling to give up my liberties and refuse to give up my right to the pursuit of happiness. I do not want to argue about this. My desire is that WE THE PEOPLE can put our heads together and come up with a BETTER plan than the ones being presented to us. When you have government handouts that are endless, and those that are receiving the handouts get to vote for those who are giving them the handouts then it will never stop. We the people have allowed two political parties, that are for the mostpart one giant self serving political party to control our government for over a hundred years then what should we expect? Well, we are now seeing the fruits of apathy. we thepeople need to turn off the television and get seriously involved. We the people need to vote out every incumbent. I know that sounds sillybut think about this, do you really think we would be worse off with average Joe or Josephine as our congressional representative or better off with someone from the republican or democratric party? I've seen what these two parties are about, nothing but greed and power. I'm ready to vote for one of my neighbors, someone I might have something in common with. What say you? - Re: Take a look

Probably 90% of the stuff the federal government controls is what I like to call extra-constitutional, ie., outside the enumerated powers granted to the federal government in the constitution. As you probably already know, the powers of the federal government are enumerated in the constitution. ALL else is reserved to the states. Period. Try telling that to the federal government now. They don't want to hear it. It is up to the states to do something about it.
So, I agree. Execs make WAY too much money. But, it is not the federal government's job to dictate such things. THAT is not in keeping with liberty and the free-market economy.

69.29.148.192Agree Tony, plus capping salaries/bonuses will create a brain drain for the very companies that were are hoping will pay back their debt to the govt. Now it will never happen and any talented executives will move on to other US corporations or worse yet, foreign corporations. They should be the ones raising hell. Though I do think the execs are making too much money especialy in lite of the bail outs I believe we are entering VERY dangerous territory when we start allowing the government to regulate the private sector. I have never seen a government program run efficiently. When was the last time we had a REAL balanced budget? Isn't it the job of the people of this GREAT (contrary to popular belief) country to regulate the government and not the other way around. I know things need to change but I hope we don't continue down a path that continues to destroy our liberties and elliminate the things that made this country so wonderful. Fear is a powerful motivator but wisdom should not be thrown aside to affect the short term. We must continue to think long term. Alot of the things the government is proposing now will be detrimental in the future. Has the FED ever been given power and then later relinquished it? Once we give them ultimate power we are no longer and will never again have a government FOR the people, OF the people or BY the people. Just my own lil thoughts on the subject. Everbody feel free to bash me and tell me what an idiot I am and that I am a rascist or a moran, but I love this country because of the people in it. The bailed out companies receive money from the government but they don't get to use it anyway they want. They still have to fulfill all their contractual obligations and especially ones to their employees. These 'bonuses' are contractual obligations companies have with their employees. All Obama did was say that the bailout money cant be factored into the companies earnings performance for use in employee benefit or bonus package calculation and the money must instead be used for other things, like backing their failed financial products.
Obama is not trying to put government control on overly high wages, he is just making rules on how tax payer money can be used and how a company that receives it must account for it. - Re: 1st thing Obama does Right

When these robber barons as they were called a hundred years ago run ingto trouble does the government say to them to "let the market work it out". Hell no. The government bails their sorry butts out. This could be corrected very easily if the government would just pass a law saying publicly held companies may not pay their managers or execustives in company stock, nor will they be allowed to take a bonus if they have reported a loss in the current quarter.
It now gets even worse. Have any of you recently tried to take money out of your 401K? Used to be you could take it out for any reason as long as you paid the penalty for early withdrawl and the taxes onit. Now you can only take it out for certain reasons. I thought it was my money, but evidently it's not, it now belongs to the market that is controlled and manipulated by the these thieves.
How long until the government says what a draftsman, sales clerk, cook, or engineer is allowed to earn??? Folks, we all need to wake the hell up and run all the republican and democrats out of office. They have had total control of our country andtotal control leads to toal corruption. We have been trampling on our own constitution for decades now. I have no political party that represents me and yet my voice is common among the masses. I have grown tired of seeing my country weakened by rewarding failure and punishing success. This country used to have the attitude that you had to work hard to be successful, but now people just assume they are entitled. That in itself breeds failure. Time to get rid of the IRS too. I am so sick of having my income confiscated by the government just to be wasted overseas, given to the United Nations, spent trampling on our constitution, and used to increase the power of the federal government. - Re: Bonus?
