There are progesterone tests they can do on your female to determine the best time to breed her. I have known of females that it seemed like the right time to breed, but they did not take for years. After doing the hormone tests, it was sucessful. I would definitely say it's a female thing more so than a male. Unless he was damaged at some point, males can be good up until 8-10 years old, sometimes longer sometimes shorter.
