Yeah that's where I went, just was wondering if anyone had done the vaccines before. We've actually had some rain this summer...thank goodness....but it's brought out a lot of toads, which snakes love to eat. I hope the 'bad' ones don't come to my house. I will leave the grass and hog-nose ones alone.
The hog-nose that came up though, it was really interesting as we didn't know what kind of snake it was at first. It coiled up and puffed out it's head, which I told my husband 'OH MAN it's a bad one!' Plus it DID make a rattling sound when we poked it. My husband killed it and when we did research we saw that that's what hog-noses do, mimic rattlesnakes by puffing up their heads and shaking their tails in the grass.
We naturally felt bad about killing a mostly harmless snake. I still didn't like that it was so close to one of my dog pens. ANY snake bite can be bad, you know get infected and everything, so I think we made the right call. But we still felt bad, hognoses are SUPPOSED to roll over on their backs when threatened and they will emit a musk to make it look and smell like they are dead. If he had done that we probably wouldn't have killed him.
So long story short, I WILL probably get all mine rattlesnake vaccinated, just wanted to hear what other people thought about it.
