renal failure

Hey Everyone! My cousin has an 8 year old boston that has just been diagnosed with severe renal failure. His chances of recovery are slim. My question is, this is the first one I have heard of....is this common or is this a rare case? And does anyone have any experience with it that I can send to her to help this with this rough time...they are devastated and considering putting him down so he doesn't suffer. Thanks for your help!
