I think I need some advice. I am looking to purchase an Boston Terrier male. I have one black and white female (from a red sire) I intend on breeding. I have seen adult males for sale but have been cautioned by my vet to make sure that the male has an up to date health record including a blood work up before I bring him home. Most breeders I have talked to so far only offer a health certificate for shipping. Is it "normal" to sell adult breeders without any health guarantees even against communicable diseases? I am curious because I contacted one breeder. She was very eager to sell me one of her adult males, which by the way, is gorgeous. The eagerness faded as soon as I mentioned the additional testing suggested by my vet (at my expense) and asked for his records from her vet including his heart worm prevention.
Are my vet's suggestions realistic? Should I be considering a puppy instead of a proven male? One that I will be certain of his health history and environment he has been raised in? I would like a male that I know I can use now as a stud but is there a risk? I do plan on any male we get being part of our family just like our Minni is. Any help or advice would be appreciated.
