What would you guys suggest? Posted by Rusty and Marialice on 6/27/2009, 7:34 pm Hello Everyone! Hoping to get some advice and opinions on this situation... Scarlett is just over 2 years old, and is now approaching her heat. Her last heat, she was bred with Oliver, which was her first attempt at breeding. Oliver is already a proven stud with several litters to his credit. Last time, these two actually mated 5 or 6 times, but Scarlett did not become pregnant. It just didn't seem to "take." We also have another male named Bruno, who is over one year old, and has not yet bred at all. We really want to have a litter with Scarlett, but as of yet, have not decided which male to breed her with. Scarlett is a red, Oliver is a red, and Bruno is a black and White, not that the color makes a difference in relation to our question. If Scarlett is bred to Oliver again, and it does not take, then we are at the same place as last time. However, if we decide to use Bruno, and it does not take, then we cannot be 100% sure if it is something on Scarlett's end, or Bruno's, as Bruno has never sired any puppies as of yet. What would you do if this was your situation? Also, while we are on this subject, what can any of you share about Fertility testing in Bostons? Male or Female? Thank you very much! In this world of sooo many Spay and Neuter laws trying to be passed, because of unwanted dogs, I think we all should make some hard decisions and be picky on breeding right now or we will all suffer if they get passed!!! Look at CA, tomorrow can be a big turning point! If you really want to do the best you can, I would go with the best match up for improvement, and the ones that have been tested for the major health problems before you breed, especially if any of the dogs in question are the ones that had the pup with the problem before, to rule out that it will not be something hereditory. I would look at topline, bite, head, ears, straightness of leg, angulation in the rear, movement, hair and skin, eye shape and placement, the parents of the dogs in question, size, dispostition and more. IF you do not have a WAITNG LIST that you have prescreened don't breed. If you don't sell mostly limited registration to help cut down on unwanted and irresponsible breeding don't breed. Really pick your dogs a part to see what you can do to improve. If the faults they have are major don't breed, if they dont pass any of their health tests, don't breed. If they make a good pair and match up that is the way you should go. I have a dog I am having to do the same thing with. You can do the progest test to see if she is ovulating and when. Jona makes many good points in her response! If you are going to breed, then do it the right way! We are lucky enough (in our relatively short period of time breeding) to have a waiting list close to 100 people, and we receive new calls and emails every single day! We prefer to meet the people here at our house, so that they can see for themselves all aspects of our program. And to say "program" sounds a little too detached for me, because each and every one of our dogs is a pet first that we love tremendously! If anything were to happen to any of them, we would not be the same anymore. I think this great attachment to all of our dogs is a great asset and endears prospective future owners to us personally. I also know that we always think of every puppy that leaves us, and we love to hear about their progress! If we never hear from people again, we worry about how the puppy is doing! We breed Boston Terriers because we love Boston Terriers and we firmly believe that they are the very best breed of Dog! If any part of you doesn't feel the same way about the Boston, then take Jona's advice, do not breed. Everything in your program, or in the daily care of your pets should be all about the Boston! They are as attached to me as I am them! My family knows that if there is something going on with my bostons, or possibly could be, then they can count me out of any plans...I'll be here with them!!! You should see Cruiz beg to go on a 4 wheeler ride (jumping up and down and doing that "oh please please") and he's even ridden the lawn mower with me (when he was a little smaller)....that is devotion, for both of us! It doesn't matter if it is with traditional colors or in colors...I just want bostons with good temperments, good conformation and be totally healthy....so thankful for my "kids". I'm working my way thru the health testing process with great results!!  Post a Response

When you say she and Oliver mated 5 or 6 times, I assume you mean they tied that many times. You know it's not a problem with Oliver since he's a proven stud. So it's either just one of those things that happens sometimes or it's her. I would say try again with whichever stud you want her to breed with.  Post a Response

There are progesterone tests they can do on your female to determine the best time to breed her. I have known of females that it seemed like the right time to breed, but they did not take for years. After doing the hormone tests, it was sucessful. I would definitely say it's a female thing more so than a male. Unless he was damaged at some point, males can be good up until 8-10 years old, sometimes longer sometimes shorter. http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/progesterone-testing.html  Post a Response
