A red male Posted by Ed on 11/3/2009, 12:53 pm I think I need some advice. I am looking to purchase an Boston Terrier male. I have one black and white female (from a red sire) I intend on breeding. I have seen adult males for sale but have been cautioned by my vet to make sure that the male has an up to date health record including a blood work up before I bring him home. Most breeders I have talked to so far only offer a health certificate for shipping. Is it "normal" to sell adult breeders without any health guarantees even against communicable diseases? I am curious because I contacted one breeder. She was very eager to sell me one of her adult males, which by the way, is gorgeous. The eagerness faded as soon as I mentioned the additional testing suggested by my vet (at my expense) and asked for his records from her vet including his heart worm prevention. Are my vet's suggestions realistic? Should I be considering a puppy instead of a proven male? One that I will be certain of his health history and environment he has been raised in? I would like a male that I know I can use now as a stud but is there a risk? I do plan on any male we get being part of our family just like our Minni is. Any help or advice would be appreciated.  Post a Response

He has had his BAER, CERF, Jv. Cataracts and AKC DNA done recently & UTD on vaccines. He weighs about 16#, red/white, AKC give me a hollar if you are seriously interested. Re: A red male Posted by j on 11/3/2009, 2:18 pm, in reply to "A red male" The Best plan if you are planing on using the new boy as a stud dog, you should also make sure he is clear of Juvenal Cataracts, his BAER Test is done to make sure he has no Uni or Bi lateral Deafness, his CERF test (eyes) and OFA Patella(knees) Tests. Your girl should be done too. Also conformation, and disposition should be a factor for a breeding girl or boy. Starting with a puppy you should try to find one from a breeder who has done these tests on both the parents of the puppy as well, though you should have these tests done on the puppy when grown if you want to use for breeding as well. I was told the male i was interested in has passed his cataract testing as clear and also the BAER and CERF test and was DNA color tested. I have not seen any of those results though. I was a little put off by the overall sense of reluctancy when i asked to speak to the breeders local vet and that he is 2 years old and not leash trained. I was advised by another breeder today that if i am seriously thinking about buying this guy i should visit the breeder instead of having him shipped. I do like that idea. I think it would be worth the cost to be safe than sorry. thanks for you advise and suggestions.  Post a Response

I would want the vet records also but keep in mind that many breeders do their own shots except for rabies. If this was to be an inside dog you might want to consider that if he isn't leash trained, he probably isn't house trained either. I have shown dogs for a friend who has a kennel and all of her dogs pooped on my patio. They had concrete runs at her house and thought they were supposed to go on concrete. This was really an irritation for me and most people never think about something like this if their dogs live in their home. I keep a huge water bowl in the kitchen and several of her dogs would try to get in it from time to time. This would flood my kitchen. They had tubs of water in their runs at home to cool off in. I'm not saying you shouldn't consider a dog that has been kenneled. You just have to be prepared for retraining some behaviors. They can also be pretty wild in the house but some are even afraid of certain things like step-ups or tile floors. The reason I suggested a sperm check is because I sold a champion male who had produced several litters. His youngest litter was 6 months old. The buyer took him in to her vet to be checked out. They did a sperm check and he was sterile. Of course I returned her money and she returned the dog. My vet tested for everything but we could never figure out why he became sterile. He lived to be 12 years old but remained sterile. I agree that meeting the breeder and dog in person is the best way to go. Sandy Wade  Post a Response

What with the hesitancy of allowing you to speak to their vet? Sounds a little off here. I would also advise that making the trip there would be an pawsitively good idea! And if I was selling a adult for breeding, I would not mind giving those results to the purchaser.  Post a Response

Imagine bringing in a full grown male to end up causing infertility or possible death to the rest of your pets/breeders. In addition, to testing, get a guarantee of soundness and temperament. I would want a guarantee that the male is not dog/human aggressive. If it doesn't work out you should have a few options for returning the dog and a partial refund. Holly  Post a Response
