As a preface, I'm running on a Comcast Cable connection and don't know anything about DSL.
I've been using the modem I bought (D Link DCM-200) when I first subscribed to Comcast in the summer of 2001. I was wondering, given the speed of technological upgrades, if modem hardware has gotten any faster in the intervening years. Then I blew out my router and my Power Mac via a lightning hit and had to replace both of those (I haven't replaced the computer yet but am using my little Powerbook laptop for now). I figured that there was a good chance I affected the modem as well since that's part of the whole packare and it's been acting odd anyway.
SO I went to Newegg.com, one of my favorite harware suppliers, and low and behold, the D Link DCM - 202 said it was running on the newest protocol AND it was on sale PLUS there was a 20 dollar rebate AND free shipping (net cost - $30.50 after rebate). What the heck. I ordered one and got it up and running today. Plugged it in, called Comcast with the new MAC address and away we went. IT'S A MINIMUM OF TWICE AS FAST AS THE OLD ONE FOR DOWNLOADS!!!![]()

And a lot faster than the wonky speeds it's been running at lately. Definitely worth the thirty bucks.
Yes, I did compare different modems and brands and vendors (remember, I do purchasing, among other things, for a living)
To see how fast your connection is see the link below except Carol Lynn Marie who's on dial up and says it doesn't work for her.
