If I were you, I'd talk to the principle of the school to which I was applying to see if I had a good chance of getting a job there, and if it did and it was just a matter of processing some paperwork or something like that, I'd talk to her/him about housing in the area. The principle is not likely to know, but if something comes up, at least the principle will know you're looking. Then I'd walk around the neighborhood asking everyone I see if they know of anyone with an apartment to rent. If you're will to share space in someone's home, people often have space that is not openly advertised, because they don't want to rent to just anyone. A school teacher is someone they might go out of their way to accomodate.
