Jan & Brian Firth recently contacted me. Jan is a granddaughter of Charles Newman & Mary Lilley. They have generously provided information on that family. Something which I have been searching for for years. I have therefore reproduced what they said here. Thanks so much Jan & Brian!!!
Dear Brian,
scrutiny - several questions spring to mind but I'll leave that for now.
up, until my cousin Nan (Vera's daughter) gave me an address in Queanbeyan that
could possibly help - it has been in the 'must do' box for a while.
the FirstFamilies2001 website. Responses to these depositories have come up
with a Newman 2nd cousin and a Lilley (Ella's daughter). There was also an
enquiry from someone researching Lilley but because she has very little info it
is difficult to make a link. Brian was playing about out of curiosity and came
upon your site. Eureka!
the next two generations?
Jan.

first lived in the Garvoc-Laang area where Charles and his brother Bill worked a timber mill until they were burned out. Later Mary ran the sweet shop next to the Panmure Hall. She also played the organ for the Anglican Church although always regarded as a Methodist. Charles was an overseer with the Country Roads Board. They eventually moved to Warrnambool.
during his working life managed a number of butter factories in the Western District and later Stanhope. Sam and Clare were both very involved in local church and community activities. Sam as a young man umpired local cricket and football matches. Later in life he became an avid lawn bowler.
was butter maker at Carlisle River, Colac and finally Stanhope where he moved with Sam's encouragement. Bob, in earlier days, played football for Panmure and suffered from Sam's eagerness not to be seen to play favourites when umpiring.
had a very brief flirtation with nursing. Her career ended abruptly when faced with the disposal of some amputated digits. She was employed as Nursery Governess to the Staughton girls at Keayang (Terang) where she met my Dad. Incidentally I'm fairly certain that Keayang was where the Lilley boys worked from time to time earlier on. Bob mentioned A.J. (Col. Staughton) being very sarcastic towards them. Ruby was enticed to Melbourne by Tom who had already succumbed to the bright lights. She worked as a relieving manageress for a chain of tearooms before marrying in 1933.
I am aware of Vera working part-time domestically for a period at Keayang but that is all I am aware of prior to her marriage. Her husband Charlie was printer at the Warrnambool Standard.
