This snippet of historic news I found on the following site seems to suggest that Mathias and William were involved in a bit more than poaching. Note the misspelling of Matthias and Lilley.

27th February 1826 was the night of the great fire of Kempston which destroyed 40 houses
in the High Street including part ot the King William PH. There is no account of the fire but
a fund for the 55 victims raised £344.13s.
