When this guy's hair is "gelled" (and I don't like using the word "gelled" because it makes peoples' hair sound like a jello mold), the guy looks a little dangerous, interesting, sophisticated and someone you'd like to give a chance to at least listen to his music (whether you'll like it or not). When his hair is NOT gelled, I think (or thought) this is just another cutesy, teeny bop boy whose music is probably mindless without much to say. Literally, by this guy gelling his hair, to me (and I can't speak for all) he opens up his music to a whole new audience and I doubt he loses that audience to which he first appealed. Your appearance and your hair can make a huge difference in your general appeal to people.
