I think that groups like the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Amvets, etc., are headed to extinction, not just in Cahokia, but across the country. When these groups were started, there were plenty of veterans to go around - from World War I, World War II and the Korean Conflict. The old geezers from WWI are gone and buried, the WWII guys have become the old geezers who are few and far between, and the Korean vets are on their way to being old geezers. Membership has dwindled, and the places we have such fond memories of going to with our families cannot survive. You notice I did not mention the men who came back from Vietnam. When they returned, they were not welcomed in the same manner as those who had gone to wars before them. A dark cloud hung over them because of the unpopularity of this war, and they needed no reminders of their service. Very few of them joined any of the veteran organizations. Neither did those returning from Desert Storm. My parents, husband, and in-laws were all members of one or more of these veterans organizations. They were places entire families could go, and I have many fond memories as well.
