delayed exposure

I just bought my wife the cannon 7.1mp compact which came top in the 'Which' magazine. On trying it at home(forgot to ask with all the festive rumpus in the shop),when in flash mode there is an irritating delay from depressing the button to actually taking the picture.She bought me a Nikon compact some years ago with the same problem.I really thought there was a reason but they would have long sorted this out.Why is this please?
