Well, first of all steph, "Canon" only has one "N" ;-)
Regarding which is best, there is no real answer. Canon people will say Canon is best, Nikon people will say Nikon is best. Each brand may have their own strengths and weaknesses, but generally speaking, both are considered the top two camera makers at least when it comes to the higher end cameras (digital SLRs).
In terms of point-and-shoot models, I believe Canon and Kodak are still the top two sellers in the U.S. (though I'm not particularly fond of many of the Kodaks, myself). Nikon's point-and-shoot models are a bit more generic than Canon, but still decent value for basic needs.
