I'm really not sure what, "What is the most I can expect to spend of a digital camera??" means specifically.

You can spend as little as $99 for a basic "real" digital camera, or you can spend as much as $7,500.00 for a top of the line Canon Digital SLR body (no lens included). So if that's what your question means by "the most you can expect to spend", then that's the top of the general range without going into specialty models that cost even more.
