To our knowledge, the battery was a built-in proprietary lithium-ion battery. Once it finally wears out, it's probably trash.
While they aren't widely available anymore, you may wish to check Ebay or other auction sites for the Sony U10/U20/or U30/U40 pocket cameras. They're extremely small, though not as thin as the flatfoto, but they do have LCD screens and take much better photos. They use rechargeable AAA batteries, so you can get those anywhere. The U10/20 take OLD "Memory stick" cards so make sure they're included as they're hard to get. The U30/U40 take newer memory stick pro cards which can still be had.
