Shadow enhancement

I am trying to get up the courage ($$$) to switch to digital. I understand digital prepress but i just read a review on the Olympus E520 that has me confused.

The camera has some method of enhancing shadow detail - my question is, does the camera actually capture more shadow detail or does it modify what it captures?

If it captures more shadow detail, is it at the sacrifice of mid-tone and highlight placement on the gray scale?
