How to take picture of myself?

I have the canon sd1100is. How can I take a picture of myself at a distance of about 8 feet? You have to push the button half way to focus and then all the way to take the picture. Again how can I take a picture of myself when I am not going to be able to push half way and then all the way to take the picture. I will put the camera on a tripod and try to use the self timer but I have not been able to get anywhere. I hace an older digital camera that did not require the prefocus and I was able to set it up for selftimer and took great pictures of myself.
