Hi,
I have a catahoula [Jake], who wandered up to my property last November - he was emaciated and scared. He had a collar with phone number on it, but even after I talked to the previous owner, they never came for him. He looked to be about 1 yr old at the time. He is still in-tact.
Jake has visited me every morning for breakfast since then. However, it still took 6 months for me to even be able to touch him. Everyday he would hop the fence and leave in the afternoon.
He came for breakfast a few wks ago and was injured. It looked like he got hung up in some wire or something, as he had a deep cut going all the way around his left hind foot. If I had the money, I would have taken him to get stitches, but could not. Since I can pet him now, I picked him up and brought him in the house. I put him on antibiotics, and doctored him for the last few wks - his foot is finally healing up good.
However, during the time I have been keeping him in the house, my 85lb Redbone has become agressive with him. He even tried to attack Jake when I had Jake on the leash to walk outside. I know that my hound is just feeling threatened / jealous, but I fear that he will do great harm to Jake, at the very least, since he has already tried to.
Which brings me to my point in all this lengthy letter - I need to find a home for Jake, but due to his timidity, it must be a special home, with someone who doesn't mind waiting 6 months [literally] for Jake to come around. They also need to have hotwire on the bottom of their fence, and above the fence - as he will dog or jump out.
Jake is very affectionate with me now, but only if no one else is around, as he is still afraid of my husband and my kids. He is starting to come around for my older daughter though.
Is there any way that you could help me? Jake has become my baby now, but I cannot figure out a solution to these problems other than surrendering him, to the right people, if possible. I am in Brooksville, FL - about an hour north of Tampa.
Thank you for any help you may have to give,
Fawn Hensley
