LMS (Michelle) Update August 25

Michelle's neuro surgeon advised today that one of the cultures he took came back positive, meaning Michelle did indeed have an infection in her brain. The culture was from deep inside the brain, and is a low grade and slow growing bacteria from the p.acnes group. It is completely treatable but does cause Michelle to have a bit of a set back while she recovers from the infection and this latest surgery. She was on three very high dose and strong IV antibiotics until yesterday and the infectious control doctor believes that is a good enough dose of antibiotics that she does not have to be on a PIC line at home for the next 6 weeks, Which is good, but we will have to watch her very closely and get her tested very frequently. Her sodium is down along with her potassium so she has to be on pills for that until it can stabilize for a bit. She is back to wearing a helmet and will probably not get her bone put back for at least 6 months. Plus, her bone is probably want caused the infection so she will most likely receive a synthetic skull cap when it is time to put it back. Her spirits are good and she doesn't seem to be having any major setbacks with her physical functionality or her cognitive processes. She may have a swallowing issue but I'm not sure yet it could just be the speech therapist at Kaiser is being overly cautious and put her back on semi pureed foods. Right now she isn't eating that much because the IV antibiotics have made her sick to her stomach. I'm hoping she will be coming home tomorrow that was the plan this morning, but the culture came back positive after the floor doctor left for the day, and the whole care team has to meet to make sure the course of treatment is appropriate for the type of infection that was discovered.
