It's been awhile so I thought I would catch you up on things. Michelle had another MRI on October 19 and her Neurosurgeon was very pleased with the results. He compared the one she had on the 3rd with the one on the 19th and in just 16 days the fluid build up and air pocket that had developed after her surgery has absorbed and is 3/4 of the way gone. That is a good thing. The doctors were concerned that the fluid buildup was because of the infection being present still in her brain. But now that it is almost gone they are confident she has conquered her infection. She won't have another MRI until February and after they see that one they will talk about putting her skull cap back on. In the mean time Michelle has been improving. She is building up strength in her legs and was able to walk 50 feet with a platform walker in her rehab on Friday. The therapist say she has the strength to walk but its the sequence of the walking process that she is having difficulty with. So we are trying to be as consistent and repetitive with her as possible so she can build that muscle memory into her brain to remember what she needs to do to walk. Since there is a walker involved now its a little more complicated than just putting one foot in front of the other like we all do, she has to remember to coordinate the walker and her steps so she doesn't fall. I am also working with her at home having her propel herself with her feet in her wheelchair so she can remember right foot then left foot etc. etc. to help her when she is standing and walking. Her dad is leaving tomorrow to go home to Texas for a bit. He has to have his knee replaced. Michelle's cousin and mother will be here on November 1 for a few weeks. Her mom hasn't seen Michelle since she was in Kaiser and was not fully awake and still had a trach in. Hopefully she will be pleasantly surprised at Michelle's progress. Today the rehab place took Michelle and about 16 other residents from her rehab to an outing to see and pet some horses, that a friend was gracious enough to open their barn to them. The therapist said it was AWESOME for all involved and very therapeutic. Michelle said she had fun and was glad they went. Cognitively Michelle has had some improvements as well. She is more oriented to place and time but her short term memory is still not there.
