what would be a good surface for a dog run?

The area is covered but the wind can blow the rain in. It is pretty muddy now in most areas. It was suggested to use walnut shells but when I put them down for pathways a few years ago the dogs seemed to get some irritation on their feet. It might just be circumstantial but I am reluctant to use them for that reason. I have some pea gravel but probably not enough to do the whole area and I was thinking that picking up poop would also pick up the gravel. Another thought would be decomposed granite but would that keep the water from soaking into the ground? I want something pretty clean as the back door to the trailer opens onto the dog area and he tends to track in mud when he comes in. I have enough problems with the dirt I track in. He prefers to stay outside so he can guard things but likes to come in occasionally to make sure everything is in order inside.
