I attended a seminar by Dr. Madigan, who is a reproductive specialist at UC Davis. He said the mortality rate among foals is really high, like 1 in 7 and the mortality rate is about half that, or around 1 in 14, for mares, but it goes up to 1 in 5 for mares over the age of 20.
And this year, I've heard of lots of orphan foals needing nurse mares.
Maybe it's worth the risk. Then again... maybe not. I guess you'd be the one to weigh that. If you decide to go ahead with it, then I wish you success and healthy mama and baby.
