Some years ago a friend had a headlight failure on his super-reliable Honda one evening out in fen country, while another mate, George, was riding pillion. Dave, being a resourceful chap, removed one of his rear indicator bulbs so that the front one was permanently on and gave him some idea of where he was going. It wasn't so difficult as fen roads tend to be straight without corners.
However, they also have t-junctions and Dave failed to notice one: the bike hit the verge across the road, vaulted the small dyke on the other side and Dave, George and Honda ended up in a field on the far side. Apart from a mouthful of mud and a broken collar bone, Dave was fine and George just got his greatcoat dirty.
