The US bills have big numbers on the corners, and obviously after a lifetime of paying out and taking in, we instinctively know what the bills are without even focusing our eyes on them.
As Bryan reminded me, there IS a "dollar coin" in the US (the "Sacajawea" or the "Susan B. Anthony", but unless you get your bank to order them for you, you'll never see one in circulation. No place in the cash drawer for them in anyone's store, and they're the same size as a quarter. You could accidentally hand one to the clerk instead of a quarter, and neither of you would notice. They don't work in any vending machine, although most machines will take dollar bills now. People hate them.
Now, our old "Eisenhower" silver dollars, now THAT was MONEY! Great big old silver things, you knew you had something when you had those, or when you had a "Kennedy" half-dollar. Big heavy real money ....
