Proper old ones also deposit their wax coating on your best friend's mum's settee.
I've got a modern RST Belstaff-alike wax cotton jacket that has a waterproof lining built in, along with pockets for body armour, etc, and it's the ideal thing to wear while hob-nobbing with the horsey set and for short trips on the BSA.
They look the part, but for actual riding in actual weather, I never want to go back to relying on wax cotton to keep me warm and dry.
*The only time they don't leak is when you leave one of the front pockets unfastened and it fills up with water, which empties out as you bend over to undo your boots.
