Errrrr I am not being pedantic here Lannis, BUT........American spanner/wrench sizes refer to the size of the hexagon head, eg 3/8 inch A/F (Across Flats), rather than the BSW as you suggest.
The Whitworth spanner sizes refer to the diameter of the bolt and are unrelated to the dimension of the hexagon head. So a 3/8 BSW or BSCY bolt is actually a 3/8 inch diameter. The hexagon can vary but is normally 0.600 inches A/F. HTH.
Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.
