Firstly I am no expert when it comes to old bikes but I like to think I check them properly if, and when, they are to be used on the road. However the only means I have of checking the brakes is to depress the lever and push against them or ride and apply the brakes. Having done this before a test one of my bikes failed when put on the rolling road and a heavy grab at the lever caused the cable to part company with the nipple. The only way I could otherwise have experienced such force was a true emergency occurring and that would have been too late. Maybe I won't be getting the bikes MoT'd every year but subjecting them to periodical checks by a garage could be money well spent.
