Several 'old school' suppliers and small job engineers in our field of interest have either retired or passed on in the last couple of years. It concerns me that much of the value of these businesses is largely dependant upon the knowledge of the owners rather than the value of the stock and equipment or goodwill. I suspect that many would be barely profitable if all of the owners' time and travel expenses were costed into the operation.
Most of us 'know a chap', often a semi-retired professional, who does this or that, largely from a lockup on a farm or at home in an Aladdin's Cave of a well equipped garage/workshop whose knowledge and skills are irreplaceable. Not wishing to appear flippant, but they are unfortunately a dying breed.
