Back in my mid 20's (so late 1980's) I was doing some major work in the garden of our new house. I had to knock down a brick wall which ran the length of the garden and replace it with a fence, and the patio needed re-laying too.
Initialy, I was intending to hire a van for the five or six weekends I imagined the work would take, but in the end I thought outside the box and bought an old Lada 1500 estate instead for £250. This was much cheaper than the van hire would have been. Both front window winders were barfed, and the windows held up by pieces of 3x2 wedged behind the door cards, and the heater valve was stuck on full, so you got a free sauna every time you drove it too.
I kept it for two or three months, until I'd finished the garden, and loaded it up with all the bricks out of the demolished wall for many trips to the tip, fetched the timber for the new fence, transported the new slabs and got rid of the old ones.
When I came to sell it I advertised it at £300 expecting to get knocked down to £250 or even £200, but the phone rang off the hook and it sold instantly for £300. Result .
