While CO2 emissions on modern diesels is certainly lower than the petrol engines, it's the particulates that are the problem. Up until now there has been no way of proving if the P filter has been "gutted" at MOT time. This is usually carried out on top of the filter and is invisible from below. The huge majority of diesel taxi's and a large proportion of private diesels have doctored filters resulting in the present crisis.There is a change coming on the 20th May, so if you have a doctored P filter,l I suggest you get an MOT before that date to give you a year's grace, because next year you will probably be stuffed.
Of course if the manufacturers didn't charge a fortune for replacement P filters, this problem would probably not exist in it's current numbers which, runs into hundreds of thousands of vehicles.
