Enclosed rear chain

We would panic if the primary chain was found to be running dry, even after a few miles, but are content to ride and tour for thousands of miles with a dry rear chain only lubricated occasionally when we think to do it after grinding dirt, water, sand, possums and other alien matter into the links. Isn`t it about time manufacturers started to enclose rear chains? Or are motorcyclists more concerned with LOOKS and are content to suffer for LOOKS?
My 1969 Yamaha YL1 had enclosed rear chain and seldom needed adjusting and the oil was always clean. As the Professor once asked; "Why is it so"?
