"The MOT lasts for a year". That does not say it's invalid if a new test fails before the year is out. Most things in the list do not make a car unroadworthy either. Emission tests or holes in exhaust systems are an example. And incidentally hardly any accidents have anything to do with vehicle condition but that's another issue.
As usual the published version of the regulations is ambiguous.
Incidentally. I think all new cars should be tested every year. That might have some little effect on headlight dazzle!
