If you position the clip with the rounded edges outwards (in your case, I think), the axial force required to unseat the clip is less than with the sharp edge outwards due to there being less engagement of the clip in the groove. In many cases it probably doesn't matter but, if you are aware of the difference, it does no harm to get into the habit of fitting circlips the "right way" round as a matter of course to have the best potential security.
IIRC, Anderton Circlips used to state this in their literature - I had it "handed down" during my apprenticeship.
