Although I've installed AdBlock now, I would've stayed with the message board anyway. No amount of advertising would've prevented me from benefiting from, say, HPM's expertise or Lannis's Transatlantic musings (to take two completely random examples from many).
Have we not tolerated advertisements in other sectors of the media? I remember only too well watching World of Sport on Saturday afternoons in the 1970s, having to patiently watch an ad break before Wallasey-born Dickie Davies (complete with grey fleck in his hair) returned to the screen to introduce the second half of the recorded Speedway World Championships.
And the TV adverts of the time weren't particularly brilliant, either:
