There's cider, then there's cider. Real cider, bottle conditioned and unpasteurized is rather pleasant. Normandy, Brittany, Northern Spain all do it. Sidra pouring in Asturia is something to behold - an astonishing performance!
People seem to home in on what I've realised is actually really crap in the UK - cloudy, nasty stuff served from barrels by 'craft' makers. In the main, filty shit.
