IMHO the Triumphs largely sold on being a Brit bike to those who only ever wanted a Brit bike. It worked well and got people who had self-inflicted themselves with patriotic old clunkers and the occasional Enfield until Triumph offered them a (shock horror) decent modern equivalent.
Meanwhile Kawasaki are more likely to do the same for a later 1970s generation with their Z900 retro which is much more in keeping with their popular past glories than the W800 could ever be.
Triumph now have to sell "custom" retro bikes to hipsters 'coz the target generation for the original Hinckley Bonnies are now looking for manageable lightweight scooters to ride in their dotage. What next a Hinckley Tina ???
