If they look at the Corolla 2 litre petrol hybrid, my own one will easily achieve 65mpg on drives of 20 miles locally going to Exeter. At times, it will show over 70 mpg. On the motorway where no battery drive is engaged, it will achieve 53 mpg on a 200 mile journey at legal speeds.
The CHR model uses the same engine and battery so should be similar. I found the visibility was bad due to the high doors and small rear windows. I would expect if a shorter lady drove one, visibility would be a problem.
I really give new cars a good test drive of 50 miles over various roads. It shows up if the armrest is good, seating is comfortable and how it deals with country lane routes. I use the same route for every car i take out. Nissan, for the latest models, removed the centre armrest and fitted cup holders so very uncomfortable for me. I can drive the Toyota with both elbows on the two armrests. Very few of the cars had decent armrests for when i am doing a 400 mile a day drive.
Avoid plug in hybrids and full EV but the most popular petrol/hybrid is excellent. Engine produces about 130bhp and the motor about 70 bhp so its very fast on overtakes when they combine.
My recent 700 mile journey around Kent just excellent with it running in the traffic jams on electric motor only.
The Corolla 2 litre is more efficient than the smaller Toyotas and better on fuel. The 1.5 and 1.8 engines use more petrol overall. They are working too hard. Get them to test drive a Corolla if they can afford one. Mine is top of the range so cost 37k but lower spec cars would be quite a bit less. I added a full glass roof to the extras on mine. Its a pleasure to drive with no real wind noise, good visibility as the door glass is large and window drops low on the waistline making it a lot better for short people. It was better than the more expensive Lexus and also more fuel efficient. No rattles or clonks unlike my Nissan which rattled underneath when cold.
I will certainly buy another petrol hybrid which requires no plug in. Just drive as a petrol car with no worries.
Note that many UK police vehicles are now Corolla estate cars as some forces have discontinued use of BMWs due to engine fires. A 200 bhp hybrid can keep up with car thieves but give the fuel economy. I expect the police version does not have the 112 mph speed limiter the private cars have
