Both our (German built) e-bikes came from Ebay, but from UK sellers with physical shops for considerably less than the "list" prices - mine had a "list" of £2400, but I paid £700 & Mrs B's "list " was £1400 but I paid £400. Mine was an ex-demo model that had been superceeded (according to the odo had covered less than 50 miles from new) & Mrs B's was a low mileage p/x. Mine has Bosch centre drive electrics, Mrs B's is a Chinese front hub motor, both have Shimano 7 speed hub gears. Of the two, the Bosch electrics have proven to be the least reliable (component failure inside the centre drive unit that left me stranded with no drive between pedals & wheel - and no spares available) - the Bosch system is probably superior when it works.
Mrs B replaced hers last year with a new Bosch powered Raleigh that was on offer at Evans cycles (£1850 & 12 months interest free finance). The change was prompted by her bike's unbranded battery starting to loose capacity after several years use. The Bosch battery on mine still functions as new.
My brother in NZ "built" an e-bike by converting a decent quality mountain bike using Chinese components bought online. Apparently it worked well - until the battery caught fire & burned his shed down !
