My XT500 Yamaha |
Took it for an MoT yesterday (Monday) in the November weather
All OK after it had failed on loose wheel spokes first time about three weeks ago.
My fault, should have tested the spokes before going...
On taking the wheel out I found I had a lucky escape
The cast in "anchor" on the brake plate that the front brake cable screws in to cracked off when I unscrewed the brake cable. Turns out a previous bodger had used a brake cable with a slightly larger threaded fitting and just forced it in putting the brake plate under stress. Looking closely I can see that it was already partly cracked through and could have failed at any time. Leaving me with no front brake and brown trowsis...
The steering head bearings were really notchy, only noticeable with the front wheel off the ground. Replaced with taper roller jobs.
The front wheel castle nut is a shouldered nut but one that was not originally a castellated nut, the castellations had been made by hacksawing slots in it!
All ready for trip to Brittany on Friday :-)
