'Dhall puris' are an integral part of the Mauritian folklore and 'sometimes' well worth the risk, perhaps. Dewa is the best place to get them from but even with them there seems to be no understanding of basic food & hygiene issues.
I often tell intending visitors that they can can fed & drunk in about a Ł1: 2 pairs of dhall puris + half bottle of local rum.
