Thank you!
Since posting I discovered the word in the OED which lists "pipi" as a word of Maouri origin relating to an edible bi-valve mollusc Amphidesma australe and other edible bi-valves such as Chione stutchburi.
So I suppose the Australian / Kiwi term has become the English equivalent of tek-tek.
