The Inaugural Season of the Millennium Furey Fall Coed Softball League got underway last night with a doubleheader between Seamus Mulligan's Pub and Harrah's Chester Casino & Racetrack.
Seamus Mulligan's won the first game in league history by the score of 15-5 and after Harrah's came back to tie the score 7-7 in the top of the fifth inning of the nightcap, Seamus Mulligan's scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to come away with a 9-7 win, and a sweep of the doubleheader.
ASA of PA Hall of Fame umpire Sonny Pompilii had the honor of working the first games in the new league.
Both teams, who were playing coed softball for the very first time, looked more like seasoned veterans, making some great defensive plays to go along with some timely hitting.
Coaches, Joe Bennett (Seamus Mulligan's Pub) and Mike Koza (Harrah's) did a nice job of organizing their teams and getting all their players into the games.
Vince Donlevie, Harrah's Chester senior vice president and general manager, (who made some nice plays himself in left field) had his team looking good in Harrah's style, with some sharp looking jerseys reminiscent of the Colorado Rockies.
Chester County has long been a hotbed of coed softball in the ASA of PA District 6, with many of their leagues now filled to capacity, and with the help of Chester County Coed Softball League commissioner Chris Esposito, some of the teams on his waiting list are beginning to play in the Millennium Furey Fall Coed League, helping make the future brighter than ever for the growth of ASA of PA coed softball in Delaware County and District 6.
