Steve,
Thanks for the kind words. It's always nice to feel appreciated and in speaking to Bob Ream afterwards, that's exactly how we both felt about receiving our awards.
Since I was totally surprised on receiving the Meritorious Service Award and didn't have an acceptance speech prepared, I kept it short.
I'd like to once again thank the entire District 6 Staff for helping to make our District number #1 in the state with new ASA of PA adult registrations for the third consecutive year, especially in 2008 when the ASA of PA was named #1 in the country with ASA registrations.
And working with the Hall of Fame committee on the ASA of PA Grand Slam Fundrasier raffle ticket has been a pleasure. It's people like Andy Loechner, Dean Amick and Dave and Kathy Persing that make organizing this fundraiser so enjoyable and rewarding.
The ASA of PA is truly a family and I'm proud and honored to be part of it.
Steve, the President's Award you received from ASA of PA President Dean Amick, is one of the most prestigious awards given by the state.
I think most people would agree that you have been a candidate to receive this award in recent years.
But in 2008 your contributions to the ASA of PA exceeded even your past years of dedication and service towards our association.
I know when Dean Amick was reading about your accomplishments leading up to presenting you with your award, you were busy congratulating others who had just received their awards and didn't really hear what he had to say.
Some of what he said, was this.
"I have known this years recipient of the President's Award for many years, ever since he has been coming to State College for tournaments beginning around 1990."
"He is, without a doubt, a softball encyclopedia and a major asset to the advancement of the ASA of PA."
"It is at this time that I would like to present the 2008 President's Award to my good friend and ASA of PA State Slow Pitch Commissioner...Steve Dimitry."
Congratulations Steve.
The ASA of PA is fortunate to have someone with your expertise who volunteers to spend so much time and effort to benefit our association in the many positive ways that you do.
It was also nice to see District 14 Commissioner Sully Gelet accept the 2008 Sportswriters Media Award for The Times Herald.
The newspapers coverage of the building and dedication of Sullivan "Heels" Gelet Field in Norristown and the article written by Matt Bretzius of the Times Herald Staff about the 2008 Daily Local/Sunoco Charity Challenge Classic that helped create awareness about the 1st year tournaments goal of raising money in the fight against cancer was compelling.
When it was all said and done the proceeds from the West Chester, Upper Chichester and Norristown tournament sites amounted to an amazing $25,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Not only did the tournament bring together the softball teams from the ASA of PA District 6, but it also brought together two Districts with rich softball histories to join in a fundraiser for such a worthy cause.
For that, we should all be proud.
