Daily Times, Summer Softball: Moe's Homers comes out swinging in sweep
In tribute to Harry Kalas, the first half-inning of the first Softball Central report of the spring will be silent.
Thank you and rest in peace, Harry.
Now it's on to those who rested in pieces after bringing in the 2009 Millennium Sunday League's opening day with a bang - or was that a ping, as in aluminum bats and aluminum cans?
Moe's Grille Homers brought out the heavy lumber - sorry, metal - in sweeping past Campbell's Boathouse, 9-7 and 22-11.
Mike Hagner was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Mike Van Wyk also homered and Marshall DiGrazio had a pair of doubles in the first game. George Horn and Shawn Lynch went 4-for-4 and Mike Soucek and Ben Chandlee both were 3-for-3 with dingers as the Homers completed the sweep.
In other Millennium Sunday League openers:
A.M. Heating & A.C. 17-24, Sawloon Pub 8-19: Tony Hendrix was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a triple, Tony Black also went 4-for-4 and Greg Havink added a two-run dinger in the opening game then Justin Hendrix had two doubles and a single as A.M. finished off the sweep.
The Thirsty Bulldog 18-12, Bulldogs 12-10: Despite not making any extra points, the Thirstymen won a pair. Jim O'Donnell and Rich Cropper both were 4-for-4 and Eric Price knocked in five runs in the first contest, then O'Donnell had a two-run single that decided the nightcap.
Da'Beers 12-18, Trophy Tavern 2-10: Pat Douglas Jr. hit a three-run homer in the top of the first in the first game and Jason Ruda was 4-for-4, Kyle Douglas had three hits and drove in five runs and Kevin Woodbury also got three hits in the second game.
Parks Entertainment 27-19, A&R Iron Works 24-13: Parks, which had one win last season, doubled that number on opening day. Tony Cicchinelli was 5-for-5, Scott Keller got a single, triple and homer good for six RBIs in the first game. McHenry followed that up with two triples and two homers with six RBIs in the game that gave Park the sweep.
Milmont Republican Club 12-7, R.P. McMurphy's Shockers 2-2: Bill Cawley and T.J. Waldie both got three hits and a pair of RBIs in the opener and J.R. Sexton and Dan Havens added two hits in Game Two for MRC.
Mighty Ducks 7-13, Columbo Lodge 4-10: Mike Fitzgerald got a single, triple and homer and drove in three runs in the first game and Sean Fitzgerald homered and drove in four runs in the nightcap.
R.P. McMurphy's Bar & Grill 7-14, Garrett Ale House II 0-10: Jason Travaglini had two doubles and a homer, to give McMurphy's the sweep after earning the win in the opener when Ale House didn't have enough players.
Woodland Supply 20-20, Maggie O'Neill's Irish Pub 10-9: The Supplymen had good enough vision (20-20) to count on Ed Panarello and Rob McCarry (both 3-for-3, combined seven RBIs) in the first game. Nick Gavin and Bob Smith combined to go 8-for-8 with four doubles and eight RBIs in the nightcap.
Untouchables 18-20, Duffer's Pub 12-17: Matt Windle had three hits and five RBIs in Game One. Pat Windle went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Chris Windle hit a grand slam and two-run homer in the second contest.
