Joe,
Upland Park is owned by Delaware County and is maintained by the Parks & Recreation Department.
The park was formerly called Camp Upland, this parcel of parkland was once owned by the Salvation Army and used for twenty-five years as a summer day camp for underprivileged children. It was purchased by Delaware County in 1968.
I will convey your concerns and suggestions to P&R and will let you know of their response.
With approval from Delaware County Parks & Recreation, I will apply through the ASA of PA for a state grant to be used for improvements to the softball fields for both adult and youth organizations.
But, with state funding for the Keystone State Games having been eliminated under Gov. Rendell's budget proposal for the next fiscal year, it will be more difficult to receive the grant next year.
One way to raise money for the fields, while waiting for a grant approval is to organize a fundraising committee involving the numerous softball leagues who use the fields.
And since I have retired as the chairman of the American Cancer Society "Charity Challenge" raffle ticket and the ASA of PA "Grand Slam" Fundraiser is done every other year, I will have more time in 2010 to be involved with fundraising for Upland Park.
Again, this is all contingent upon the proper approval.
Proceeds from a grant or any fundraising could be used to survey the fields and in developing a grading plan.
Camp Upland Field E would become the main field for the softball complex and would have a 300 ft. fenced field with dugouts and bleachers.
I have already contacted a prospective sponsor for a scoreboard.
Thanks for your input on the condition of the softball fields at Camp Upland. I know the people at Parks and Recreation will listen to and address your concerns.
