Note: The following is something that I don't enjoy writing but have no choice in order to explain the league's position.
The DeMarco's Restaurant & Bar vs. Campbell's Boat House had their regular season doubleheader rained out on Monday, May 21st.
Since then I have tried to reschedule that doubleheader three consecutive Mondays, but each time DeMarco's said they couldn't play.
What I don't understand is that the team only plays in the Chester County Men's Softball League on Tuesdays and even though they have some players on a team in the Delco East Modified Softball League, not being able to play three straight weeks is not acceptable.
Well the real reason came out the other day by email, from a team spokesman.
The team does not want to play any more regular season games before the playoffs and was willing to give up the 2nd seed and first round bye and possibly dropping to 4th place in the standings if Key's Tippling House would have swept their doubleheader last night vs. Campbell's Boat House.
This puts the league in a dilemma, because if DeMarco's is allowed to forfeit to Campbell's, those two wins puts Campbell's in the playoffs and keeps A&R Iron Works out of the playoffs, which the standings currently reflect.
This is completely unfair to A&R Iron Works and will not be allowed to happen.
So because of DeMarco's unwillingness to play their make-up doubleheader vs. Campbell's, A&R Iron Works will now play Campbell's on Monday, July 2nd, beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Furey Field #1 in a play-in game to see who advance to the quarterfinals against (you guessed it) DeMarco's.
The winner of the play-in game will play a Best-of-3 quarterfinal series on Thursday, July 5th vs. DeMarco's beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Furey Field #2.
If DeMarco's doesn't have the most valid reason that I ever heard in my 30 years of running softball leagues in Delaware County, they will be expected to play or forfeit out of the playoffs.
If this happens to a team that I highly respect for their talent and the way they conduct themselves on the field, it will be a shame, especially since the team would no longer be eligible to participate in the ASA of PA Class "D" States, because they are no longer in good standing in the league they qualified from.
Like I said, no fun writing this, but disclosure was needed in order to clarify the situation that has involved so many teams and league officials.
